The Poster Scouts

One of my favorite projects last year was that of the Poster Scouts. Due to the secrecy of this project I had to keep my mouth shut since August 2020, but now I'm very happy to present to you the result of hours of hard work in the midst of a heatwave.

My illustrated poster for the Poster Scouts, the February issue

Since 2019 I've been making several music posters for music venue De Effenaar in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Sadly, due to Covid-19, lots of concerts were either delayed or cancelled, and the budget to create these posters understandably evaporated into thin air. I was really bummed about it, since they were always fun projects with lots of creative freedom. But then my contact at De Effenaar called: he had a new job at Toffey, and they started a new club.

The Poster Scouts is a club focused on Dutch illustration and graphic design. It was founded by a group of commercial poster makers, who thought that the medium deserved more love. I was immediately enthusiastic about the concept: for € 25 per shipment you receive a poster at home every two months. This poster is made by a Dutch illustrator and remains a secret until after the launch. You only get to see the portfolio of the artist in question beforehand. This way, you can surprise yourself and hang work in your home you otherwise never would've bought.

I loved this idea, because it makes illustration accessible to people outside of the arts and culture industry. So of course I said yes, and started sketching right away.

It's rare to work with clients who are so enthusiastic about the work that you're making, and who give you freedom to do your own thing. I was really happy to be part of the first group of artist that helped launch this new club. And honored, too, since it's a very talented group. Go check them out!
